Churches in Naples

Many cities in Italy are visited by millions of tourists every year, but one of the best ones you can possibly visit is Naples. Everyone who visits it falls in love with it because it has a great mixture of culture, historic places, incredible restaurants where the most delicious traditional recipes are cooked and because the inhabitants of the city are among the warmest in the whole country. But many people also go to visit some of the many churches in Naples because, not only there are many, most of them are fabulous.

One of the best churches in Naples is, without a shadow of a doubt, the Naples Cathedral, also known as Duomo di Napoli, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta and Cattedrale di San Gennaro. This Roman Catholic cathedral was finished during the 14th century and what makes it a popular sight among tourists is the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro you can find in it with frescoes by Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco as well as other art pieces.

Another one of the churches in Naples that can’t be missed is the Gesù Nuovo Church which is located in a square that has the same name. Built in the beginning of the 17th century right outside the western boundary of the historic centre of the city, inside visitors can find a vault with some beautiful frescoes by painters such as Belisario Corenzio and Paolo de Matteis. But during your visit to this church which started off as a palace you will also have the chance of seeing various chapels such as the chapel of the Visitation, the chapel of Saint Francis Xavier and the Nativity chapel.

One of the most visited churches in Naples is the Santa Chiara Church, which can be found inside Santa Chiara, a gorgeous religious complex where, apart from the church, you can also find a monastery, tombs and an archaeological museum. The original church was built during the 14th century but it was re-decorated in the 17th century 17th century by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro in Baroque Style. Inside the Santa Chiara Church you will find the tombs of King Robert of Anjou and Francis II as well as many chapels all around it.

Most people’s favourite church in Naples, however, is the San Lorenzo Maggiore Church which is located in the historic centre, right between via San Gregorio Armeno and via dei Tribunali. This church was built in the 13th century and it’s the place where Boccaccio, the famous Italian writer, met his beloved Fiammetta back in 1338. Although the church is built in Gothic style, inside you will find two baroque chapels: the Cacace Chapel and the Chapel of Sant’Antonio, both of which were designed by Cosimo Fanzago.
